The Germans’ favorite ice cream flavors and where to get them in Frankfurt

Eis Frankfurt am Main

For many Germans, ice cream is simply part of summer. Whether as a refreshing way to cool down on hot days or as a tasty snack between meals, ice cream is very popular in this country. But which flavors do Germans actually prefer? I’ve done some research and put together the top 5 most popular ice cream flavors. I’ll also tell you in which Frankfurt ice cream parlors you can try these flavours.

1st place: Vanilla – the classic

Vanilla leads the ranking with 16.5 percent of the votes. I’m not surprised, because vanilla ice cream is simply a timeless classic. It goes with almost everything and is a solid base for creative ice cream creations. I personally like the combination of vanilla ice cream with hot raspberries and a dash of cream.

You can find a particularly delicious vanilla version at N’Eis in Eckenheimer Landstraße. Here, the ice cream is made fresh and by hand every day. You can taste it! The vanilla harmonizes perfectly with the creamy ice cream.

2nd place: Hazelnut – the nutty crowd favorite

15.3 percent of respondents named hazelnut ice cream as their favorite flavor. No wonder, because the delicate nutty note makes the ice cream something very special. I think hazelnut ice cream tastes best on its own, as this allows it to develop its full flavor.

My tip for hazelnut fans: definitely pay a visit to Pallina Gelato. The hazelnuts are specially roasted here before they are added to the ice cream. This gives the ice cream an incomparable depth.

3rd place: Stracciatella – chocolate indulgence with a crunch

Stracciatella comes in third place. 13.9 percent prefer vanilla ice cream with crunchy chocolate shavings. The chocolate pieces give the creamy ice cream a great crunch. A perfect contrast, in my opinion!

One of my favorite places to go for stracciatella is Bizziice in Sachsenhausen. Here, the chocolate chips are pulled into the ice cream by hand, which gives the whole thing a particularly high-quality touch. Simply heavenly!

4th place: Chocolate – for those with a sweet tooth

Pure chocolate ice cream is also very popular with Germans. 16.3 percent of study participants named this as their favorite. Understandable, because cocoa makes you happy and goes perfectly with creamy ice cream. My favorite way to enjoy chocolate is with chocolate sauce and chocolate chips on top – sweet tooth alert!

You can get great chocolate ice cream at N’Eis. Dark chocolate with a high cocoa content provides an intense flavor. Perfect for anyone with a chocolatey tooth.

5th place: Strawberry – fruity and fresh

13.3 percent of respondents like strawberry ice cream best. An absolute must in summer, in my opinion! Fruity-fresh strawberry ice cream is simply the perfect refreshment. With a dollop of cream, it becomes a delicious dessert in no time at all.

My insider tip for strawberry ice cream: Pallina Gelato. Only sun-ripened strawberries are used in the ice cream machine. You can taste it in every scoop! Fruity, but not too sweet – that’s how strawberry ice cream should be.

Conclusion

Vanilla, hazelnut, stracciatella, chocolate and strawberry – according to the study, these are the five most popular ice cream flavors among Germans. All classics, but each flavor special in its own way. There are numerous ice cream parlors in Frankfurt that master these flavors to perfection.

My top 3 recommendations for ice cream in Frankfurt are:

  1. N’Eis at Eckenheimer Landstraße 134: impresses with fresh ice cream every day and intense flavors. The vanilla and chocolate are terrific.
  2. Pallina Gelato: uses only the best ingredients such as hand-roasted hazelnuts and sun-ripened strawberries. You can taste it in every scoop. The small ice cream store can be found at Fahrgasse 7 in Frankfurt city center.
  3. Bizziice at Wallstraße 26 in Sachsenhausen: scores points with hand-drawn chocolate chips in stracciatella. For me, this is one of the best stracciatella ice creams in Frankfurt.

But ice cream is of course a matter of taste. Everyone has their own personal favorites. That’s why I recommend you try out Frankfurt’s ice cream parlor scene and find your own personal favourite ice cream! Because ice cream always works, whether old or young, big or small. The main thing is that it’s delicious and best enjoyed in good company.

With this in mind, I wish you a wonderful summer full of ice cream! Enjoy yourselves! And don’t forget: Ice cream is always a good idea. 🙂
